Director Fabric & Color

Overview :

Sources & presents high quality fabrics that meet our brand aesthetic and business needs from conceptualization through development.  Researches and interprets fabric trends in the competitive market and vendor market. Applies research to the overall design concept and brand aesthetic.  Acts as close liaison on fabric related topics and trends with Design, Product Development, Merchandising, and Sourcing, ensuring high quality fabrics are available at appropriate pricing and lead times.  Oversee Color function.


Responsibilities :
  • Researches fabric trends and presenting to Design ideas and options that aesthetically align with the design concept and meets criteria to fulfill the business needs.
  • Works creatively ahead of season to provide direction, newness, and developed options in fabric. Takes inspiration from many sources to keep ahead of fabric trends and apply with a global perspective, but with interpretation & translation for the brand. 
  • Supports new fabric development for new sub brands or initiatives.
  • Works with design teams and development of each area to confirm concepts are being covered and calendar timelines are being met for development and bulk.
  • Attends fabric shows (as applicable) to evaluate trend and sourcing opportunities. 
  • Spearheads fabric summits to showcase trends and new developments, and potential new mills.
  • Establishes and strengthens partnerships with sourcing base, key vendors, and fabric mills as related to the sourcing strategy.
  • Ensures fabric development is in line with J.Jill sourcing and pricing strategy.  Partners with Sourcing to maximize opportunities in manufacturing, quota, duty, and costing opportunities as related to fabric development.
  • Sources new mills to develop new initiative or brands/synergizing with current partner mills to buy/negotiate and produce fabric for bulk that are within price range, design aesthetic, and availability.
  • Manages fabric buys/best deliveries that will meet production manufacturing needs or sourcing alternatives that meet the same criteria.
  • Provides technical analysis, properties, limitations, and strategic support to product development, sourcing, and design for development and bulk fabrics. 
  • Manages domestic and international travel (when applicable) to US, Asian, and European mills to ensure research is in line with J.Jill required aesthetics.
  • Creates fabric reference library for both fabric and trim that can be easily accessed and used seasonally to provide options, ideas, and solutions.
  • Oversees work flow and priorities of color evaluations and production color approval process.  Manages strategy & partnership with bulk color services.
  • Manages creative talent, mentor, train, develop, and evaluate staff.

Qualifications :
  • Advanced understanding of technical aspects of fabric (yarn size, construction, finishes)
  • Solid knowledge of fabric constructions and types
  • Ability to understand mill capabilities thoroughly to direct development into most appropriate locations
  • Ability to communicate clearly both written and verbal
  • Proven follow-up and follow through skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with shifting priorities
  • High level of attention to detail and good organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • High energy level, team player with ability to motivate others

  • 10+ years of related experience in global fabric development
